November Challenge: Why do I eat out so much?

I’m going to spice things up on this site.  I’m going to start throwing in a challenge every few months, then be sure to report back to every-one (no but really, just one follower so far) how the challenge has helped to correct something I want need to work on.

November’s challenge is: Stop Eating Out So Much (ya weirdo)!

This is especially going to be challenging considering the month of November is practically begging you to pick up any food in sight and chow down on it.  But, you have to start sometime, right?

I eat out A LOT.  This should not be confused with eating terrible fast food every time said eating out occurs.  I actually make very healthy (I use healthy loosely because I know how much sodium is in anything you get out and about) choices when I eat out.  The reason I’m trying to zap this habit is because I’m spending a small fortune for someone else to prepare my food.

My day goes like this:  Starbucks in the AM for breakfast.  No, I have NEVER been one of those girls to order a $6.00 white mocha Frappuccino every day.  I get my usual grande bold coffee every morning.  $2.13.  That’s not bad, and I’m not giving that up.  Ok?  Glad we got that out of the way.   Along my merrily little Starbucks way though, I picked up a bad habit.  I started ordering a spinach wrap.  They are 280 calories and have a good amount of protein, and kept me completely full till lunch.  Score.  The good news is that its a low cal breakfast that is made of ingredients that are good for you.  The bad news is that it brings my $2.13 total to $5.67.   I would be lying if I said I didn’t get them at least 3-4 times a week.  Part of me wonders though, if it’s worth it in the long run to continue on.  I do NOT have time in the mornings to make myself an omelet or eggs with low cal toast, or even oatmeal.  I’m literally running out the door every morning.  Some of you may be saying “if she has time to sit in the drive thru at Starbucks for 5 minutes, she has time to make breakfast.”  No, no I don’t.  Not the kind of breakfast I like to eat, that’s healthy, filling and super yummy.

Anyways, continuing on…lunch usually consists of the new Chick Fil A cobb salad with grilled nuggets and fat free honey mustard dressing, and an unsweetened iced tea.  Yaaaaaaaa, so that’s 10.00 every day.  If I don’t go to CFA, I go to Subway and get either a grilled chicken salad or a ham and turkey breast 6 inch with baked chips an unsweetened iced tea.  9.00.  In my world it does cost more to eat healthy.  It just does.

We eat dinner in most nights…thank goodness.  This is something I have been working on over the past year.  I think we eat in about 3-4 nights now.  Usually Thursday is pizza night, and Friday and Saturday nights we grab take out, or eat out with friends/family.

My challenge for November specifically relates to lunch.  There’s no reason I can’t bring lunch or go home for lunch everyday and eat a healthy meal and save the $$.  And, to continue to make meals at home for dinners.

I’m very stubborn and I usually end up doing something the hard way a few times before I realize it could have been much easier.  Eating out for me is two fold.  One, for the convenience, and two, because I feel like its a special treat and I like that feeling of being able to go get it everyday.  By the time lunch time rolls around, I can’t wait to “go get something.”  It’s such a mental thing that I need to correct.  There are no advantages to this that I can justify.  Eating more at home would save me oodles of money AND be healthier.  I’m not sure what it’s going to take for me to get that through my thick skull.

Here’s to making a big change in my world!

Wish me luck all!  I think I’m going to need it.

What are your worst habits that you absolutely cannot justify, and do you have a plan to break them?
